If you happened to watch the NBA Finals these past few weeks you certainly were a witness of the way LeBron demonstrated what it takes to being a winner, and we are not talking about his God-given talents or even his skill set. We are talking about something way different. Something way more important, something any ball player, just like you, can do. We break it down for you in 3 ways.
Clear The Noise
Throughout the entire playoffs, every talking media head in their infinite wisdom broke down whether or not Lebron is clutch, should we compare him to MJ, is he chocking or folding under the spotlight? You know what Lebron did? He just played. He didn’t let the media scrutiny get to him. He never responded in a negative way. This isn’t easy to do. But you don’t have to be a 6’8 270lb point-forward to be able to do this. It just takes a little mental toughness. Being mentally strong enough too not let others deter the way you play this game is a big step to becoming the best player you can be. Clear out all the noise, and hone in on the most important aspects that create a positive experience. You might not have ESPN talking about you, but you know where the ‘noise’ or the ‘haters’ are coming from. Clear that.
Lebron has Twitter and Instagram. He loves social media. You know what he did once the playoffs started? He stopped all social media interaction. No more tweets or Instagram photos. Take a look at this pic, his last Tweet was on April 2oth, right before the playoffs started. He didn’t tweet again until they won Game 7. When you are able to limit distractions during important times of your career, your chances of success significantly rise.
Demand Excellence from Teammates
If you watched the games closely, you probably noticed that LeBron is always talking to Mario Chalmers. That’s his point guard so you might expect them to interact a lot, right? If you really pay attention, you’ll probably see that LeBron is constantly yelling at him, like a lot. This has been well documented in other media outlets. In the right context, this isn’t always a bad thing. LeBron demands excellence from Mario and Mario accepts and expects that. This is an integral part of leadership. When Mario misses a defensive assignment or overlooks giving it to LeBron in the post, especially during key moments, LeBron emphatically lets Mario know about it. The message is clear but honest….“It’s winning time, and I need you to be at your best.” LeBron is demonstrating great leadership qualities and Mario knows that. And as a good teammate, Mario understands this isn’t about “calling him out” this is about a team clicking on all cylinders to a win a championship.
What else did you notice about LBJ that you might want to integrate into your game? You don’t have to have his talent to mimic some of the positive things he does.

3pt Academy Team
When speaking to a coach earlier this week, he mentioned something interesting to me. He said he challenged his team to go beyond “wanting” to win. He said they must “need” to win. This simple challenge creates a whole new dynamic in thinking and how his players now approach each practice and game.
I really think this speaks volumes of who you are as an athlete…sure, its easy to say I want to win. But having a burning desire to need a win is so much more powerful.
Which one are you: Want or Need?
